Letter From The Director Dear Friends,
Twenty-two years ago, a young girl waived good-bye to her mom and dad from a bus headed for summer camp that promised to change her heart and mind. Of course the young girl was skeptical of the camp's promise to bring new meaning to her life, but she decided to sign up for sign language class at camp, and from that moment, her purpose in life was clear: help deaf people. That young girl's mission hasn't changed since that day at camp, and her love for the deaf community remains as genuine.
Truth be told, I am that little girl -- older now, but no less passionate about serving the deaf community. That's why I founded ICS nearly fourteen years ago.
My goal then was to bridge the gap of understanding between the hearing and the deaf communities without sacrificing the uniqueness inherent in each culture. Today, my role as ICS's director compels me to maintain that line of communication between the hearing and the deaf in ways that are beneficial to both communities, and I have never stopped trying to provide the most professional staff and proficient interpreters to make my childhood dream a reality.
The fact is ICS is more than a list of interpreters; we are twenty years of experience in the deaf community that can provide answers to questions about ADA or upcoming deaf events, plus offer workshops about deaf culture and the proper use of American Sign Language. After all, there is more to know about the misgivings of deafness than signing, and ICS strives to clarify the common myths about deafness and the deaf culture.
For so long now I have worked tirelessly to fulfill my childhood dream of effecting change for the betterment of the people in my life. And, while I might not have brought about a revolutionary understanding of deaf awareness, I would like to believe that I haven't lost sight of why ICS exists and how little my purpose in life has changed.
Respectfully,
Janessa Price Executive Director
